Builder’s upstand Designed to install directly onto a fully insulated and weathered builder’s upstand.
External upstand dimensions Rooflight size should match the external upstand size, with +20mm / -0mm tolerance.
0° to 5° upstand pitch Suitable for upstand pitches from 0° to 5°. A level upstand is recommended for appearance.
Minimum upstand requirements Minimum upstand height 150mm. Minimum upstand width 85mm for suitable fixing.

Installation checklist

Ensure the roof covering dresses up the sides and over the top of the upstand.
Provide a smooth, level bearing surface before positioning the rooflight.
Check that external upstand dimensions match the ordered rooflight size.
Follow the official Brett Martin installation guide before fitting.

Important safety note

These rooflights should be considered fragile during installation. A suitable risk assessment must be carried out to define the measures required to prevent falls through the rooflight, in accordance with CDM regulations and Rooflight Association guidance.

Where blinds or shading devices are installed beneath the rooflight, position them as far from the glass as practicable and preferably choose light colours to help reduce thermal stress risk.

Laminated vs toughened inner panes

Toughened inner pane Supplied as standard for standard roof lantern installations.
Laminated inner pane Available for enhanced protection against falling glass in the event of accidental breakage.
Project assessment Glass choice should be considered against the project location, use and relevant guidance.

Product FAQs

Pyramid Roof Lantern glass options explained

Choosing the right glass specification is important for daylight, solar control and overhead safety. The answers below explain the key differences between toughened and laminated glass options.

What is the difference between laminated glass and toughened glass?

Laminated glass has two layers of glass bonded with a clear interlayer. If the glass cracks, the interlayer helps hold it together. Toughened glass is heat treated to make it stronger, but if it breaks, it breaks into small pieces and falls away.

What is the best glass option to choose?

The best choice is usually a combination of toughened glass on the outer pane and laminated glass on the inner pane. This is often referred to as toughened over laminated glass.

Laminated glass is commonly recommended for the inner pane because it helps remain in place if damaged, reducing the risk to people below. Toughened glass works well on the outer pane, where it needs to withstand weather and temperature changes.

When should I consider blue solar-control glass?

Blue solar-control glass is useful where reduced glare and solar heat gain are required, particularly on south-facing roofs or large glazed spaces exposed to direct sunlight.

Glass Pyramid Lantern
I don’t usually bother reviewing, but this deserves it. Bought for a loft room project for more daylight and a cleaner look. The pyramid shape gives a really nice feature look on the roof. Looks sharp from outside - it’s a proper architectural detail. The frame looks slim and the lines are really clean. It brings in a softer, more even light than we expected.

We’re so pleased to hear the pyramid rooflight has added both more daylight and a strong architectural feature to your loft room project. It’s great to know the slim frame, clean lines, and softer light all stood out. We really appreciate your feedback and your support.
