  • Installation: Designed to install directly onto a fully weathered builder’s upstand (minimum 150mm height, 85mm width).

The Pyramid Roof Lantern is engineered for simple and secure installation on flat or low-pitch roofs, mounting directly onto a fully weathered and insulated builder’s upstand.

Installation guidelines

  • Install on a fully insulated and weathered builder’s upstand. The roof covering must dress up the sides and over the top of the upstand, providing a smooth, level bearing surface.
  • External upstand dimensions should match the ordered rooflight size (rooflight size = external upstand size) with a tolerance of +20mm / −0mm.
  • Minimum upstand height: 150mm.
  • Minimum upstand width: 85mm to provide a suitable fixing surface.
  • Suitable for upstand pitches from 0° to 5°; for best aesthetics, a 0° (level) upstand is recommended to avoid a “lopsided” appearance.
  • These rooflights should be considered FRAGILE. A risk assessment must be carried out to define the measures required to prevent falls through the rooflight, in accordance with CDM regulations and Rooflight Association guidance.

Laminated vs toughened inner panes

  • Toughened inner pane supplied as standard.
  • Laminated inner pane option improves protection against falling glass in the event of accidental breakage.
  • Where blinds or other shading devices are installed beneath the rooflight, they should be positioned as far from the glass as practicable and preferably in light colours to reduce the risk of thermal stress fracture in laminated glass.

What is the difference between laminated glass and toughened glass?

Laminated glass has two layers of glass bonded with a clear inner layer, which holds the glass together if it cracks. Toughened glass is heat treated to make it stronger, but it breaks into small pieces and falls away.

What is the best glass option to choose?

The best choice is usually a combination of toughened glass on the outer pane and laminated glass on the inner pane. This is known as a toughened over laminated glass option.

The Rooflight Association recommends laminated glass for the inner pane because it stays in place if it breaks, reducing the risk to people below. Toughened glass works well on the outside, where it needs to cope with weather and temperature changes.
