The Brett Martin Classic 6-Pane Glass Roof Lantern is a double glazed aluminium roof lantern designed to provide natural daylight for flat roof extensions and living spaces. The 6-pane layout uses additional glazing bars to create a traditional lantern appearance while maintaining strong daylight transmission.

This roof lantern is commonly installed above kitchens, dining areas, and open plan rooms where a central glazed roof feature is required. The thermally broken aluminium frame and Low-E double glazing help reduce heat loss while maintaining clear views through the glass.

Roof Lantern Size Options

The 6-pane roof lantern is available in a range of standard sizes designed to suit common flat roof openings.

Lengths mm: 1500 to 3000

Widths mm: 1000 to 2000

Example size combinations include:

1500 × 1000
1800 × 1200
2000 × 1500
2500 × 1500
3000 × 2000

Smaller lanterns are often used above compact kitchen extensions or dining areas where a focused source of daylight is required.

Medium sizes are commonly installed in standard rear extensions where balanced daylight is required across the room.

Larger lanterns are used in open plan living spaces where a wider glazed roof feature helps distribute daylight across the entire area.

All sizes are based on external upstand dimensions, and bespoke sizes are also available where a project requires a non standard opening.

Frame Construction

The roof lantern uses a thermally broken aluminium frame designed for overhead glazing.

Aluminium provides strong structural support while allowing slim frame profiles that maximise the glass area. The thermal break helps reduce heat transfer between the interior and exterior of the building.

The aluminium frame is powder coated to provide resistance against weather exposure and long term durability.

Frame Colour Options

Frame colour combinations are available to match both interior finishes and external window frames.

White inside / White outside – RAL 9010 - Used where a consistent white finish is required inside and outside the building.

White inside / Anthracite grey outside – RAL 9010 / RAL 7016 - Used where a lighter interior finish is preferred with darker external window frames.

Anthracite grey inside / Anthracite grey outside – RAL 7016 - Used for modern extensions where darker frames are used throughout.

Black inside / Black outside – RAL 9005 - Used where a darker internal and external frame colour is preferred.

White inside / Black outside – RAL 9010 / RAL 9005 - Used where a neutral interior finish is required with a darker exterior appearance.

Glass Specification Options

The lantern uses Low-E insulated double glazed units designed for roof glazing applications.

Each glass unit includes:

- Toughened outer glass

- Low-E self cleaning coating

- Toughened inner pane as standard

The toughened outer pane provides strength and resistance against weather exposure. The self cleaning coating allows rainwater to help remove surface dirt from the glass.

A laminated inner pane option is also available.

Toughened inner pane – Used for standard roof lantern installations where toughened safety glass is suitable.

Laminated inner pane – Used where additional overhead protection is preferred. Laminated glass helps hold the pane together if damaged.

Glazing Tint Options

Two glazing tints are available to control daylight and solar heat.

Clear self cleaning glass – Used where maximum daylight transmission is required.

Blue solar control glass – Used where reduced solar heat gain and glare are required, particularly on south facing roofs or large glazed spaces.

 Installation

The roof lantern is designed for installation onto a prepared builders upstand on flat or low pitch roofs.

This installation method is commonly used on new extensions and refurbishment projects where a roof lantern is installed to introduce natural daylight into the room below.

Benefits

Designed to maximise natural daylight, the Brett Martin Roof Lantern creates a bright, open feel while delivering strong thermal performance for modern homes and extensions. Slim aluminium profiles provide clean sight lines, while the thermally broken frame and Low-E double glazing help reduce heat loss. The self-cleaning outer glass minimises maintenance, and quick installation onto a prepared builder’s upstand helps save time on site.

Features

The roof lantern is available in 4-pane or 6-pane layouts and comes in 9 standard sizes, ranging from 1500 × 1000mm to 3000 × 2000mm. Each unit is supplied with a toughened inner pane as standard, with an optional laminated inner pane available for enhanced overhead safety. Manufactured in the UK, the roof lantern is supplied with a 10-year warranty.

The Brett Martin Roof Lantern is engineered for quick, straightforward installation on flat or low-pitch roofs, mounting directly onto a prepared builder’s upstand.

Installation guidelines

  • Roof Lantern should be installed by competent roofing contractors following Brett Martin’s installation guide and all relevant health & safety legislation.
  • These rooflights should be considered FRAGILE. A risk assessment must be carried out to define appropriate fall-protection measures in line with CDM regulations and Rooflight Association guidance.
  • Install onto a fully insulated and weathered builder’s upstand. The roof covering must dress up the sides and over the top of the upstand with a level, obstruction-free bearing surface.
  • External upstand dimensions should match the ordered rooflight size, with a tolerance of +20 mm / -0 mm in both directions.
  • Minimum upstand height: 150 mm. Minimum upstand width: 85 mm to provide a suitable fixing surface.
  • Suitable for upstand pitches from 0° to 5°. For aesthetic reasons Brett Martin recommend constructing the upstand level (0°); a pitched upstand may result in a “lopsided” appearance.

Laminated vs toughened inner panes

  • Laminated inner panes help prevent glass from falling into the space below if breakage occurs, offering enhanced overhead safety.
  • Toughened inner panes may be used in certain locations subject to a satisfactory risk assessment in accordance with British Standards and Rooflight Association guidance.
  • Where blinds or other fittings are installed in the lightwell, they should be positioned as far as practicable from the glass and preferably in light colours to reduce the risk of thermal stress fracture to laminated glass.

What is the difference between laminated glass and toughened glass?

Laminated glass has two layers of glass bonded with a clear inner layer, which holds the glass together if it cracks. Toughened glass is heat treated to make it stronger, but it breaks into small pieces and falls away.

What is the best glass option to choose?

The best choice is usually a combination of toughened glass on the outer pane and laminated glass on the inner pane. This is known as a toughened over laminated glass option.

The Rooflight Association recommends laminated glass for the inner pane because it stays in place if it breaks, reducing the risk to people below. Toughened glass works well on the outside, where it needs to cope with weather and temperature changes.

We’ve lived with it for a month now and it’s been excellent. Opted for laminated glass for extra safety.
